It was also so exciting to have an actual discussion about our plans for marriage, rather than focusing on the expectation of an epic romantic gesture behind the decision. We talked about how we would like our wedding (and marriage) will be intentionally non-traditional, specifically with regards to embodying a more equal partnership rather than one that places the wife (i.e. me!) in a disempowered, "secondary" position and the husband in a position of economic or relational authority. We can and do see ourselves as equal partners which, to me, is very hopeful and exciting! We also briefly talked about outdoor weddings, bbq's, and summer celebrations (i.e. summer 2013, not this summer)... so stay tuned!

I can't wait to share more details with you all as they unfold! Thanks to everyone for putting up with our mushy nerdiness over the past few years, you can expect quite a bit more from here on in! ^_^
xoxo.

ReplyDeleteVery similar situation with me. I have been with my boyfriend ever since I was 15; over 8 years now. We are going to the courthouse at the end of may, but nothing formal was ever done. We are thinking about having a picnic-esque wedding on the same date next year and hopefully go on a honeymoon. Congrats! http://nauticalowl.blogspot.com/

ReplyDeleteMassive congratulations to you both :) sounds like you did it in a very sweet, and real way, with the best of intentions. So lovely that you have a ring that really means something too. xxx
ReplyDeleteI haven't been reading your blog for long but congratulations! I really love your approach to being engaged and discussing your partnership in that way. I think it was John Green who talked about how weird it is that marriage proposals are usually portrayed as something that is thrust upon a woman, a decision that she has to make right away as opposed to the man who has actually had time to think about it (without discussion), and that really is a pretty ridiculous way of going about things. Anyway, yay love!
ReplyDeleteYAYYYY so exciting! Congratulations to the both of you : )
ReplyDeleteI actually really love how yall's engagement happened. Me and my boyfriend have talked about our commitment to each other and how we'd like to be in each other's lives long term, but I seriously couldn't imagine a traditional down-on-one-knee kind of thing. No ma'am not for us! We're also extremely poor things so I've often wondered how to go about the ring thing. I love how you're wearing your grandmother's! You're story is helping me think outside of the box a bit!
Just lovely. You guys are the coolest. And by the way you're the cutest thing ever!
