Well hello beautiful people!

This outfit was totally inspired by Liz's latest "What I've Been Wearing" instagram series. I love how she so effortlessly pairs sweaters with dresses. For some reason I have a hard time with that - I just tend to see the dress as this one big piece of fabric that CANNOT BE CHANGED by anything. Weird right? But this is the kind of simple yet annoying fashion conundrums that I find are constantly being solved by reading style blogs.

...You know, I would so much rather go through my blog list or tumblr-feed and see amazingly rad individuals, rocking out their personal style and being DIVERSE AND  UN-PHOTOSHOPPED HUMAN BEINGS who aren't wearing impractical/extremely expensive garments draped over themselves or being posed in a way that subtly (or overtly) caters to a decidedly straight male gaze, and perpetuates passive female stereotypes and unrealistic beauty norms. So yay for indie style bloggers, who are in control of their images and style! I am constantly inspired by the ability of my fellow bloggers to be subversive and creative, all while promoting a sense of community and sharing. Seriously. Mad love.

Thanks for listening to my little rave, hope you're having a lovely week! ^_^

xoxo.

  2. I am so with you, I have seen so many hugely interesting photos and photo shoots done by bloggers that inspire me a lot more than most of what I see in standard editorials.

  3. I totally agree with you and I very rarely even buy womens magazines anymore. I occasionally splash out on a vogue or elle collections special but half of the 'advice', features and sex tips I find in your standard girly mags leave me feeling deeply depressed or angry as they aim to generate so much insecurity and anti-feminist thoughts in their readers just so they can sell us more products and buy more magazines in order to find out 'what men REALLY think about their girlfriends' and 'the REAL reason why you're still single' etc. Blogging, on the whole, has far more integrity and the community of like-minded, imaginative and independent women is the closest thing to sisterhood I've experienced in my day-to-day life. :)

    1. Girl, I totally hear you. It seems that so much of pop culture and the fashion industry is monopolized by big business and corporate agendas. Any inkling of empowering messages are so watered down or co-opted they are confusing/problematic at best. I think the more alternatives we have to these kinds of messages the better, and this is where indie blogging can come in. We're not experts by any means, but we're individuals trying to sift through these weird, contradicting or oppressive messages like everyone else. Hence the warm, fuzzy feelings of like-mindedness and imagination! :)

Thanks for sharing Dulcie! Also your blogs is one of my new faves! :)

  6. What a cute outfit! One of my most worn outfits is a dress-sweater combo, but I agree with you that it took me awhile before I realized you could alter a dress. You're preaching to a choir apparently, because I agree x

  9. Adorable. That dress is awesome - it's barely noticeable that it's horses, but so cool that it is.

I think reading blogs gets me a lot more inspired than magazines. For sure.

  10. amen! i couldn't agree more with you about the support and inspiration that comes from indie style bloggers! i think it takes SO much more creativity to take what you have and make it into a stylish ensemble than buy what the masses have produced and told you how to wear it. where's the fun in that? :) i laughed when i read your statement about seeing the dress as a solitary piece of clothing that cannot be changed or adapted into anything else. i find myself doing that all the time...but i just turn to my blogroll for ideas of how to step out of my box! :)
p.s. i adore the print on this dress!

  11. I, too, feared the layering dresses into things OTHER THAN dresses. Then I figured out they can pretend to be skirts once in a while. REVOLUTIONARY.

As far as being inspired, I definitely love reading about real girls more than glossy pseudo-model bloggers any day. After all, I'm still just a "real" girl! You inspire me ♥
